What are egress fees?

Egress fees are what cloud providers charge you when you download your own data. AWS S3, for example, charges per GB downloaded. HummingTribe charges nothing for egress — you can download your data as many times as you like at no extra cost.

Is my data backed up?

Accepted Answer

Your data is stored on a RAID array, which protects against disk failure. However, this is not a backup service — it is a storage service. If you delete a file, it's gone. We recommend using this as part of a broader backup strategy, not as your only copy.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my storage tier?

Accepted Answer

Yes — from your client portal at any time. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades take effect at the start of your next billing period.

Is this GDPR compliant? Can I get a DPA?

Yes. All data is stored exclusively on EU-based infrastructure. We can provide a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) — contact us at hello@hummingtribe.com before or after ordering.

What happens when I cancel?

Accepted Answer

Your service stays active until the end of your current billing period. After that, your bucket and all data in it is permanently deleted. Make sure to download anything you need before cancelling.

What happens if I go over my storage limit?

Accepted Answer

We'll notify you before that happens. If you're getting close, you can upgrade your plan at any time from your account portal. We won't cut off your access without warning.

Can I try it before committing?

Yes — all plans are monthly with no lock-in. Sign up, try it out, and if it's not right for you, just cancel before your next billing date.

What tools and apps can I connect to it?

Most backup and storage tools work out of the box — including rclone, AWS CLI, s3cmd, Cyberduck, Duplicati, Synology Hyper Backup, Veeam, and restic. If it supports S3-compatible storage, it'll almost certainly work with us.

Do you support versioning or file history?

Not currently. This is a storage service, not a version control system — if you delete or overwrite a file, it's gone. We recommend pairing it with a backup tool like Duplicati or Veeam that manages its own versioning on top of the storage.

Is there a file size limit?

You can upload files up to 5GB in a single transfer. For larger files — think video archives, disk images, or large datasets — tools like rclone automatically split the upload into chunks and can handle files up to 5TB.

How does access control work? Can I set permissions per bucket?

Yes. Each bucket gets its own set of access credentials — a key and secret — that you manage from your dashboard. You can create separate keys for different buckets, so an app only has access to what it needs. Standard S3 policy syntax isn't supported, but this approach is simpler and works well for most use cases.

Yes. You can set a bucket to public read, which is useful for static website hosting or sharing files via direct URL. Private buckets (the default) require valid credentials to access anything.

What kind of speeds can I expect?

The storage runs on dedicated hardware in Germany, optimised for sequential read/write workloads — exactly what backup and archiving tools need. You won't hit the throttling common on shared cloud platforms. For latency-sensitive databases or high-frequency small file operations, we'd recommend evaluating with your specific workload first.
